Program
Associates examine individual learning and leadership styles in this four and a half day opening retreat. Several assessment tools facilitate personal evaluation. Group members learn to work together through simulations and problem-solving exercises. Associates also begin to articulate personal and professional goals, and develop a learning plan they will follow throughout the program.
During the academic year, associates convene for three
sessions that cover topics ranging from personal leadership styles to
organizational leadership. Associates consider how to build partnerships within
their schools and communities. They also identify ways to address current
leadership issues and apply their learning to their goals. Associates apply
their learning by developing a systems analysis of an issue or area within
their school or district. This analysis then serves as the basis for the second
summer session’s work. In the spring, a one day session is held, regionally, where associates from that area meet to coach and be coached by core VLSP faculty as they implement their plans.

In this 4-day session, associates present the results of their own work which is critiqued and reviewed through a series of “consultancies.” Associates also explore strategies for implementing change in their schools, improving the organizational culture, and strengthening relationships within their communities and throughout the state.
