History of the Snelling Center
For 16 years, The Richard A. and Barbara W. Snelling Center for Government has been at the center of tough, intricate issues by promoting active citizenship, encouraging civil discourse, and modeling thoughtful, respectful discussions and decision-making. As the state’s premier independent, non-partisan public policy organization, the Snelling Center plays a vital role in developing leaders and in shaping conversations around the state’s most difficult decisions.
The Snelling Center was established in 1992 in memory of Richard A. Snelling, whose five terms as governor were marked by energetic and ethical leadership. His wife Barbara, whom he credited as his partner and conscience, has a five-decade record of service, both in Vermont and nationally. Together, this respected couple built an extraordinary legacy of engagement and service that stands as inspiration and model as we consider the issues facing Vermont today.
