Effective public school leadership requires more than professional knowledge. It demands passion, the ability to articulate a vision and engage others in that vision, and the ability to facilitate organizational change.
To strengthen these capabilities among Vermont educators, the Snelling Center developed the Vermont School Leadership Project (VSLP) in collaboration with prominent members of Vermont’s business and education communities. VSLP was launched in 1995 and has graduated 15 classes, creating a collegial leadership network of over 370 alumni.
In 18 seminar days, held over 17 months (July to November of the following year), VSLP offers intensive professional development for superintendents, principals, curriculum and special education directors, as well as other education professionals who have proven leadership abilities and seriously aspire to leadership roles.
The program is rigorous and demands a significant time commitment, plus a deep commitment to personal growth and development, and to making a difference in education in Vermont. The Snelling Center is seeking candidates with a strong sense of integrity and ethics, a disposition towards transparent and collaborative leadership, and the ability to reflect deeply on how they lead. The Vermont School Leadership Program will develop leaders who will impact the educational system in Vermont. The leaders will
- Know themselves as a leader
- Know themselves as a leader in relation to others
- Know themselves as they become system thinking leaders.
The Project’s target audience includes, but is not exclusive to, superintendents, principals, curriculum and special education directors, as well as other education professionals who have proven leadership abilities and seriously aspire to leadership roles.
The program offers re-licensure credits only. The faculty of the Vermont School Leadership Project include Jeff Evans, Executive Director of the Vermont Curriculum Leaders Association, Meagan Roy, Superintendent of Washington Central Unified Union School District, and Valerie Gardner, Director of the Program.
