VLI Class of 2010 Session Descriptions

September 24 & 25, 2009 - Addison County
Team building exercises and experiential activities help associates become acquainted, and prepare for the program. Assessment tools will begin to identify the different ways participants process information, communicate, and construct ideas.
Session 2: KNOW THY SELF
October 22, 23, & 24, 2009 – Orange County
A series of assessments and exercises, including 360o feedback, creates a rich picture of each associate’s leadership style. Associates create personal development plans they will work with during the remainder of the program. Additional exercises help associates form a cohesive learning community.
Session 3: THE CALL TO LEADERSHIP (Ethics and Systems Thinking)
December 3 & 4, 2009 – Lamoille County
An introduction to ethical decision-making and systems thinking provides a conceptual framework for associates. Associates will have opportunities to apply these concepts to their professional and community work, and to the range of issues they will explore during the remainder of the VLI program.
Session 4: DIALOGUE, POLITICS and DECISION-MAKING (Health Care)
January 15 & 16, 2010 - Chittenden County
An overview of Vermont’s health care system sets the stage for an exploration of the ethical dimensions of this complex issue, and the role of dialogue, politics, and policy development in the decision-making process.
Session 5: THE SHAPING OF PUBLIC POLICY (Infrastructure)
February 7, 8, & 9, 2010 - Washington County
The statehouse provides the backdrop for associates as they develop an understanding of the nuances of Vermont government and policymaking. Representatives from the three branches of government, the media, and special interests, explore the interplay among values, ethics, policy, and finance in the public and private sectors.
Session 6: TRANSFORMATION (Education, Corrections, and Economy)
March 18, 19, & 20, 2010 - Windham County
Each session day provides an overview of the issue coupled with an exploration of efforts to create meaningful systems change. Leadership ability as well as political, fiscal, and cultural realities are examined. The corrections day will take place at a correctional facility.
Session 7: CREATIVE LEADERSHIP (Public Engagement)
May 7 & 8, 2010 - Bennington County
Associates deepen their awareness of their own leadership abilities and styles through creative reflection and exercises, explore elements of creative leadership, and examine ways innovative leaders are able to foster effective public engagement processes.
Session 8: COMMENCEMENT
June 4 & 5, 2010 - Addison County
Associates reflect on the year and on their growth, and consider ways to apply their learning to their personal, professional and community work. Festivities honor their efforts and commitment.
